Today’s Fabulous Image in Cinema: Penélope Cruz in Vanilla Sky

Any explanation as to what makes Penélope Cruz–with her glance that could dismantle bombs by way of unadulterated whimsy  and a fetching, vintage herringbone coat that incites almost as much jealousy as the knowledge that she’s dating Javier Bardem–so irresistibly charming in the above image from Cameron Crowe’s curious (and curiously wonderful) Vanilla Sky would imply that Penélope Cruz–with said adorable glance and coveted coat–is in fact not irresistibly charming in the above image.  That, dear reader, would be simply unacceptable.

Sex and the City BOOOOO!, or: Sometimes You Just Have to Shut Up and Drink the Kool-Aid-tini

I’m really glad that I never said I’d eat Charlotte’s spaceship hat if I became excited for Sex and the City 2, because right about now I’d be trolling Paula Deen’s website in hopes of figuring out how to best deep fry that thing.  New (and appealing!) Sex and the City 2 trailer, y’all:

Maybe the stick I’ve had up my ass about this movie has finally given me toxic shock, or perhaps my emotional age is getting to be as old as Samantha’s cooch and thus causing early onset dementia, but Sex and the City 2 doesn’t look half bad.  I mean, it doesn’t look good in the way that the latter, more emotionally nuanced seasons ever were, but I’m willing to make peace with the fact that these movies will never recapture that feel, so I might as well quit my bitching and raise the pink flag to Michael Patrick King.  Seriously, given that Carrie’s plotline is like Casablanca if Casablanca dropped the whole Nazi thing and was set in Abu Dhabi and written by a drag queen, I’m already sorta giddy.  But then there’s this moment that made me go “Whaaat?“:

Oscar Clip Roundup: Does The UK Success of Mamma Mia! REALLY Indicate the Return of the Musical?

Last night’s Oscars had some truly wonderful moments.  And then there was that whole damn Slumdog Millionaire sweep.  Blech.

But there were some wonderful moments!  Like how cute was it when Kate Winslet’s dad whistled to her?  

Answer: the cutest!  Added to that, her speech felt wonderfully unrehearsed and genuine.

Or when Penelope Cruz won supporting actress for her feisty turn in Vicky Cristina Barcelona?  How great was that?

Awwww, she thanked Almodovar!  That’s more adorable than a dozen terrier puppies in my book!

And really, how gay–in all the best, most politically-forward-thinking ways possible–was this year’s Oscars?  Consider exhibit A:

Oh, and of course, exhibit B:

So gay.  I found both Dustin Lance Black’s and Sean Penn’s wins (along with their speeches) to be two of the moist poignant and affirming moments of the evening, blissful reminders that art and politics need not remain separate spheres of discourse; each can enrich the other, and together they capture something truly transcendental.  

Also, their speeches made me cry, but really, what doesn’t?  Making me cry is less of a litmus test for greatness so much as a litmus test for ensuring I still have a pulse.   

Anyways!

There was one moment that truly stuck out for me in this year’s ceremony, and that was this one.  Be sure to watch it all, because it will make you re-evaluate your current understanding of the world:
