Now That We’re Back in Blog Action, Let’s Discuss Star Trek
May 14, 2009

star trek wicked awesome

Sometimes you need a blog break, a short hiatus to take a blog breather and recharge your blog batteries.  Some people take this is the form of a stay-cation, or perhaps they take a debauched long weekend in Las Vegas, or maybe instead it’s a quiet rest in a cabin in the mountains that’s far away from civilization.  In my case, you spend time with the family for Mother’s Day.  And you see Star Trek.  Hot damn does that movie ever do the blog body good.

I recognize, what with it only being a mere two weeks into summer movie season and all, that I may be veering into full-on nerd hyperbole by making the following statement, but seriously, y’all: Star Trek is this summer’s best escapism.  It really has everything you could ask for in a summer movie.  There’s Chris Pine being hot and brash as James Kirk.  You’ve got Zachary Quinto being hot and Vulcan as an emotionally complicated Spock.  Eric Bana does his magic (aka, being hot) while also being evil and bald as the villainous Romulan Nero.  We also get Zoe Saldana being hot and feisty fierce as Uhura, and James Cho also being hot and doing some totally bitchin’ sword fighting as Sulu.  And, oh yeah, there’s also some of the most dazzling (and in all likelihood the most coherent) action sequences you’ll see all summer.

Dead Man’s Bones is Reason 762 to Love Ryan Gosling
April 9, 2009

You really don’t need that many reasons to love Ryan Gosling.  The fact that he’s Ryan Gosling is totally enough.  Still, knowing that he’s in a band only adds to the lovability factor, and it also doesn’t hurt that this of his song is really damn good:

It’d be easy to say that this is just my own personal Ryan Gosling love making me biased, but nothing makes me put on my “blech!” face like Half Nelson, so that can’t be it.  I think it’s the fact there’s something wonderfully akin to the Arcade Fire going on with this song, but infused with a thoroughly old-timey church revival vibe.  Added to that, any music video that’s going to look like a silent film directed by Carl Th. Dreyer (they even got the aspect ratio right!) is like favorite-icing atop dream-boyfriend-cake.  And don’t get me started about how I feel about men in vests.  Suffice it to say, it’s a whole ‘nother layer of icing, and it’s possibly the most delicious icing ever created by man.

So, yeah, Dead Man’s Bones, y’all.  They’re your new favorite band.  I hope you can deal with it.

Thanks to Entertainment Weekly for reporting on Dead Man’s Bones.

Looks Like BAM’s Giving us a Danish Delight
March 16, 2009

No, not the pastry, though that’d be perfectly acceptable as well.  They’re doing a retrospective on Danish filmmaker Carl Theodor Dreyer, so they’re feeding our minds instead of our tummies.  Pastries would certainly make this retrospective complete, but still, let’s get excited!  There’s live piano accompaniment for the silent films (!), a movie about homo things (!!!), and Vampyr (squeee!!!).

Vampyr can’t really be described as a movie in the traditional sense; it’s more like a 75-minute version of the video from The Ring.  Or a really bad, Gothic-themed shroom trip in black and white.  Trust me, those are compliments.  Here’s a clip to illustrate what I’m talking about:

Amazing.  I recognize this’ll probably come off as the most ludicrous statement of the day as it lands somewhere between being totally nerdy and totally pretentious, and YouTube is a poor substitute for seeing a movie on the big screen (or even on DVD), but how Dreyer moves his camera through space is really something else.  And that something else is totally brilliant.

There’s absolutely no excuse to not get yourself to BAM at some point for at least one of the screenings, unless you’re not in NYC.  Or you have a deathly allergy to good things.  Then it’s acceptable.  Otherwise, go to a bakery, buy some danishes, and get your butt over to BAM.  You can make it a Danish-and-Danish-Film Extravaganza.

Now wouldn’t that just be delicious?
