For some time, I’d been trying to put my finger on Eddie Redmayne’s rather singular attractiveness, but thanks to this recently released promotional still from Tom Hooper’s upcoming biopic The Danish Girl, I believe I’ve put a well-manicured finger on it:
The androgyne is certainly one of the great images of Camp sensibility. Examples […include] the haunting and androgynous vacancy behind the perfect beauty of Greta Garbo. Here, Camp taste draws on a mostly unacknowledged truth of taste: the most refined form of sexual attractiveness (as well as the most refined form of sexual pleasure) consists in going against the grain of one’s sex. What is most beautiful in virile men is something feminine; what is most beautiful in feminine women is something masculine . . .
—Susan Sontag, “Notes on ‘Camp'”, #9
Aha! Susan Sontag’s “Notes on ‘Camp'”, as I so often find, is the perfect decoder ring for appreciating life’s finer thing, which now includes Eddie Redmayne, elegantly coiffed in an enviable bob and sporting a fetchingly familiar shade of red lipstick.
